Once upon a time
I was a large and beautiful tree
Feeding diverse birds of the air
Housing some in my branches
And giving shade to tired animals
One day, a human came into the forest
I danced, rustling my leaves
For he was the first human I’d ever seen.
He came closer, touching my trunk with a happy smile
Then he macheted me!
Oh how hard I tried
But the machete’s sharpness, I couldn’t withstand
I became a log of wood
A sad dead tree without hope…
He discarded my leaves in the forest
Myself and my branches, he took home
I watched as his wife used some of my branches for fuel wood
And I? The husband dealt with, using his saw.
He kept sawing and hammering
Driving in nails that made me winch in pain
He tortured me for days!
Turning me into what he called a table and chairs.
The next day, the whole family gathered
Meals were placed on the table
And they sat around on the chairs
Eating their meal with cheerful chatter
Thus a new life began for me
As I got a new name and a new function:
I am dining table on which the family feeds.
